A woman from Hartlepool has saved her house from burning down by using her BIG smalls.
Jenny Marsey’s cotton pants in a size 18-20 suffered minor burns as they were used to extinguish a frying pan fire, which her son and nephew started whilst frying some bread at the house in Meryl Gardens.
Jenny’s son of 18 first made the fire worse by throwing water over the flames only to be saved by her quick witted nephew Darren Lines aged 23 by grabbing the his aunts delicates and using them as a fire blanket.
Mr Lines, 23, said: “I just grabbed the knickers, put them under the tap to dampen them and then used them to put the fire out.
“The extractor fan had fallen on top of the oven and then all the flames went up. The electricity had gone off and we couldn’t see.
“It was just the first thing I picked up.”
Mrs Marsey, 53, was out for a pub meal when the fire began on Sunday afternoon.
“I think it’s funny now but at the time I was just shell-shocked,” she said.
“I couldn’t believe it when I found out how they stopped it.”
She said the blue cotton knickers were a Marks & Spencer pair that she bought a few years ago.
“I call them my emergency ones,” said the mother of four. “They’re the ones you wear when you’ve run out of all your others!”
